Penguin on Vacation

March 2014

Materials:

• Penguin on Vacation by Salina Yoon
• white lined paper appropriate for kindergarten age students
• pencils
• stamp for completed papers
• crayons
• penguin coloring in page
• glue stick (optional)

Teacher Prep:

I found large lined paper and used a glue stick to glue the pages to the back of a large penguin picture for each student.  

Lesson Implementation:
After reading and discussing the events of Salina Yoon's Penguin on Vacation students completed the writing prompt 

"If I were a penguin I would go on vacation to ________________." 

I encouraged students to extend the length of their sentences by first stating where they would go and then use "because" to give an explanation for their choice.  

After completing their sentence students read their sentence out-loud and began coloring the picture of their penguin.

When the students completed their assignment they read their sentence once more and then gave themselves a stamp on their page.
